Why Wait To Upgrade

Of course you want your technology running smoothly allowing for you run your firm efficiently, productively, and securely. Keeping it up to date is essential for this, and your success.

But who’s got time to worry about any of that? Definitely not you.

So here’s a notice that you might not be aware of: Windows 10 is going away in October.

You might have heard me say it already because I’ve been banging this drum for a while now, but now you really need to do something about it if you haven’t already.

The good news is that making the switch should be easy and give you added benefits to your business.

Let’s break down why you should not wait to upgrade to Windows 11.

The Benefits of Upgrading to Windows 11

1. The current Microsoft offering

The reason that should be obvious is that it is the current OS from Microsoft. That means it has all the bells and whistles as far as features go, and will continue to be patched for both functionality and security. This can’t be overlooked as it is the most important aspect.

2. Top-Notch Security

Security is a top concern for law firms handling confidential client data. Windows 11 is designed with advanced features like Secure Boot and Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0, which create stronger barriers against cyberattacks. These tools provide peace of mind, helping you meet your ethical and legal obligations to safeguard client information.

3. Better Performance

Windows 11 isn’t just more secure; it’s faster and more efficient. Expect quicker boot times, smoother multitasking, and better overall performance. Your team will spend less time waiting for their computers to load and more time focusing on serving your clients.

4. Seamless Collaboration

Windows 11 makes working with Microsoft tools like Teams and Office 365 even more effortless. Whether it’s scheduling meetings or sharing documents, your firm can streamline communication and improve productivity across the board.

What’s Holding You Back?

You might have some reservations about upgrading, and that’s understandable. Let’s address the most common concerns.

“What if my current software doesn’t work on Windows 11?”

Compatibility is key, so it’s worth checking if your existing software is ready for Windows 11. Windows 11 launched over 3 years ago so most major legal applications have already been updated, and Microsoft’s compatibility tools make it easy to double-check.

“My hardware might not meet the requirements.”

Windows 11 does have stricter hardware requirements than Windows 10, but you don’t have to guess. Use Microsoft’s free PC Health Check tool to find out if your devices are compatible. If you’re due for a hardware refresh, this might be the perfect opportunity to invest in equipment that will keep your firm running smoothly for years to come.

We use this rule of thumb, to determine how to proceed.

  • If your PC is 5 years old or more, then replace it (and the new PC will have Windows 11).
  • If your PC is 3 years old or newer but still on Windows 10, then upgrade your license (for free!)
  • If your PC is 4 years old, that’s the gray area overlap. Run the PC Health Check to see if the device is compatible. If so, take a look at other factors, such as how many devices you have in this category, how critical each machine is, and your overall budget – if you can afford to upgrade it, it’s probably best, but if you can’t then you can make due for a little while longer.

“I don’t want to disrupt my team.”

I hear you. We all feel that way (including us IT folks). Transitioning to a new system can feel overwhelming, and while Windows 11’s interface is different than Windows 10, the overall structure is the same, so there’s little learning curve for your staff.

And I’m not going to lie, every new OS always comes with bugs and changes that might drive you crazy. But it’s been a few years so the wrinkles are ironed out and the “new” changes are now standardized. The interface is the best it’s ever been and only getting better.

If you’re worried about the physical transition being chaotic, you can plan the rollout during off-hours or in phases to minimize disruptions.

Why Wait? You Shouldn’t.
